Is online poker illegal? That's the big question for online poker players from America. And the short answer is ... No, online poker is not illegal in the US.
But it's a big question. And a short answer just won't do.
Firstly, the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006 did NOT make online poker illegal. What it did in effect was make the banks and other financial institutions responsible for policing where Americans spent their money online.
While this did not make online poker illegal, it sure did make it hard to fund your online poker account.
Having said that, some states are trying to make their own laws regarding online poker. Most notably, Washington state did make playing online poker illegal.
After the passing of the UIGEA, many online poker rooms stopped accepting American players. But many others didn't stop then, and still accept new players from the US today.

Duplicate Poker was billed as the only legal online poker room in the US. Because of it’s slightly different approach to online poker, it claimed to have removed the gambling aspect of poker and so it was classed as a game of skill.
Well, it doesn’t matter much now, as Duplicate Poker has shut its doors.
Citing the downturn in the global economy, they have ceased operations and are in the process of returning their players funds.
With the current financial squeeze, and the ongoing maturity of the online poker market, we will probably see more closures and amalgamations of online poker rooms in the coming months.
